Some people don’t like to become engineers, and they give valid reasons for it. Well, I wanted to become a Structural Engineer, and it was my childhood dream. Sadly, I couldn’t achieve it. I am not good at maths. It is a well-known fact – to become an engineer, you have to be an expert in maths. Now, that is a reason to not to become an engineer. So, for people who were born without a brain for maths, it is just a dream. Well, they will hate it. You won’t take long to understand whether mathematics is your cup of tea or not. So, if you have confirmed it to yourself that you are not good at maths, change your dream to become someone else. You can’t become a Structural Engineer. Just don’t waste time on it.
Let me ask you a question. Have you heard about the Eiffel Tower? You have heard about it for sure. You know where it is, and how tall it is, and so on. But if I ask you about the Structural Engineer who made it a reality, probably you would know nothing about him. In other words, it is a job that you will not get the credit for all the hard work you do. People talk about civil engineers, architects, and contractors, but who talks about Structural Engineer? Nobody talks about him. The same story goes for aircraft industry as well. The pilot gets all the credit for flying the plane safely, but nobody talks about aircraft maintenance engineer. He is the person who makes sure the aircraft is fit to fly or not. The pilot can’t fly the aircraft without the engineer’s confirmation on airworthiness. But the pilot gets paid more and more credit.
If you want to live a happy family life, then don’t become a Structural Engineer. Well, I am not the person who says it, but people say it. I came across an online discussion on this hot topic, and some had said it there that if you want to retire early and live a peaceful life with your family, then don’t become an engineer. They may have a point. My best friend works as a Structural Engineer for a reputable construction company in the town, and he has told me several times about the busy life he is spending as an engineer. He feels negative about it. Yes, engineers get paid well, but do they get paid enough for the hard work they do? So, if you are an engineer, ask yourself about it.
Engineering is hard and stressful. An engineer said it to me. I can’t make any money – that is what he told me. If you are not good at problem-solving, then don’t even think of becoming a Structural Engineer. Engineering means solving problems every single day. You have to be a creative thinker too. Computer designing software and programs are challenging Structural Engineers out there. So, can you be sure about the demand for engineers after 10-20 years? Of course, many positive reasons are there to become an engineer. Do your research and compare yourself the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a Structural Engineer. It is interesting to know your decision.
